What do they do

The IMB works with governments worldwide to develop and implement effective tactics to reduce unlawful activity in the maritime industry. This includes providing intelligence services with regular updates on the movement of suspicious vessels, as well training and seminars for government officials on legislative frameworks surrounding marine security. In addition, IMB assists governments with capacity building projects such as the creation of maritime law enforcement agencies in countries that lack resources. The organization also helps maintain records associated with unlawful activities such as vessel identity frauds or stolen goods onboard vessels, through its open-access Piracy Reporting Centre located in Kuala Lumpur.

Other core functions of IMB are investigating reports from major shipping organizations, identifying trends in illicit maritime behavior worldwide and issuing public advisories that warn ships about particular threats such as pirate attacks; designing preventative measures for vessel protection; offering information about international laws governing interception operations; facilitating communication between different actors involved in the fight against piracy; coordinating international campaigns against smuggling; monitoring compliance with sanctions imposed on vessels by United Nations resolutions; and cooperating with other nongovernmental organizations working on issues related to marine security.
