What does GDT mean in UNCLASSIFIED

GDT (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) is a system of symbols and conventions used in designing manufactured parts. It provides designers with the ability to specify a certain degree of flexibility in part design allowing for greater product accuracy, cost-savings, and quality assurance.

GDT helps create designs that are specific to production processes as well as allows for tolerances that accommodate any variations that might occur during production. This results in accurate parts at lower costs due to improved tolerances, fewer scrap parts, reduced inspection time etc.

The type of tolerance used depends on the application but common types include form tolerance, size tolerance, orientation tolerance, position tolerance, profile tolerance and runout tolerance. Each has its own symbol which is placed directly onto a drawing or CAD model along with other dimensional information.

GDT is widely used by many industries including manufacturing engineering, automotive engineering, aerospace engineering, shipbuilding, tool & die making etc.
