What Is Dysfunctional Voiding?

Dysfunctional voiding refers to an abnormal pattern of urination where a person experiences frequent or prolonged urination. It can be caused by several different factors such as anatomical problems in the urinary tract, emotional stress, neurological disorders, or the use of certain medications. Symptoms of dysfunctional voiding can range from mild discomfort to severe urinary incontinence. Some common signs and symptoms of this condition include leaking urine when one coughs, sneezes, or laughs; difficulty passing urine; feeling unable to completely empty the bladder; post-void dribbling; and urgency to pass urine with little warning time before it happens.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosing dysfunctional voiding often requires more than one test such as an ultrasound scan of the bladder, cystoscopy (a procedure which uses a small tube-like camera to look inside the bladder), urine tests, flow rate tests and post-void residual (PVR) tests. Treatment for dysfunctional voiding needs to be tailored towards individual patients but can include habits changes such as double voiding (urinating twice within a short period of time). If lifestyle changes are not effective then medications may be prescribed such as anticholinergics, beta-3 agonists, alpha blockers or 5alpha reductase inhibitors. In some cases surgery may also be required if there are structural problems in the urinary tract that need addressing.
