What does DTAP mean in MEDICAL

DTaP stands for Diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis vaccine, pediatric formulation. It is given to children to help protect them from serious illnesses related to diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (pertussis).

The DTaP vaccine is typically given in five doses at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15-18 months old and 4-6 years old. The doses may be given as a shot or through drops placed into the nose depending on age.

All children under 7 years of age should receive the DTaP vaccine you can get vaccinated at your doctor's office or clinic.

As with all vaccines, there may be some minor side effects such as soreness or swelling where the injection was given; fever; fussiness; tiredness; loss of appetite; vomiting. More serious side effects are rare but could include a high fever; seizures; non-stop crying for 3 hours or more; severe weakness or limpness in any part of the body. There are no alternatives available to the DTaP vaccination however it is not mandatory that you get it. But it is recommended by many doctors due to its efficacy in preventing diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.
